Scholarship & Awards

The Human Biology Awards do not require an application, students are automatically considered based on academic merit. Awards are typically reviewed and offered late summer/early fall for courses in the preceding year. 

The HMB Excellence Awards can be attributed to the ongoing generous support of alumni to the Directors Fund for Human Biology 

 

Value: $100

This award recognizes outstanding achievement in a 3rd year Human Biology lab course by the Faculty of Medicine, Division of Teaching Laboratories. The award is given to the top ranked student from amongst the following lab courses: HMB310H1, HMB311H1, HMB312H1, and HMB314H1. The award is named after a faculty member, Dr. Ron Wilson, who has made significant contributions to laboratory teaching.

Value: $100

The Human Biology Research Project Award will be awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student based on accomplishments in an HMB research project course.

Awardees will be selected by a committee including the Director and Associate Director, and at least one other faculty member teaching a Human Biology course.

This award was established through the generosity of Dr. J.J. Berry Smith, the founding Director of the Human Biology Program.

Value: $100

The Human Biology Teaching Assistant Award will be awarded to a graduate student teaching assistant in an HMB course who has demonstrated excellence in teaching.

Awardees will be selected by a committee including the Director and Associate Director, and at least one other faculty member teaching a Human Biology course.

This award was established through the generosity of Dr. J.J. Berry Smith, the founding Director of the Human Biology Program.

Human Biology Program Excellence Awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • Course Awards recognizing students receiving the highest academic achievement in the following courses: HMB200H1, HMB201H1, HMB202H1, HMB203H1, HMB204H1, HMB265H1
  • Program Awards recognizing third year students receiving the highest academic achievement (cGPA) in the following programs: Human Biology major, Health and Disease Major and Specialist, Neuroscience Major and Specialist, Fundamental Genetics and its Applications Major and Specialist, Global Health Major and Specialist.
  • Graduating Student Awards recognizes two students receiving the highest academic achievement (cGPA) among all Human Biology programs.
  • Student Leadership Awards recognizing the demonstrated leadership of HMB students to HMB, the Life Sciences and/or the University.

Value: $2500

Awarded to 2 full-time undergraduate students in the Department of Human Biology on the basis of academic merit. A student is eligible to receive the award twice during their studies.

Value: Based on financial need

In memory of PDF iconAlejandro Duque, this award is disbursed as part of the University of Toronto Financial Aid (UTAPS program). To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the University of Toronto on the basis of financial need in the Faculty of Arts and Science with a preference with students that are studying in the Human Biology program.
