Biography : 

Dr. Taverna’s research projects in the labs of Dave Hampson (UofT), John Roder (Mount Sinai Hospital), Mike Salter (Hospital for Sick Children) and John MacDonald (UofT) included structure and function relationships of glutamate receptors, the role of neurotransmitter receptors in synaptic plasticity and learning and memory, neurodegenerative disease processes, and function of hippocampal neurons (place cells) in spatial learning and behaviour. He has taught in the Department of Psychology and has been with Human Biology since 2007. He currently teaches several 400 level courses for the neuroscience and health and disease programs, and the 200 level Introduction to Human Neurobiology course for the neuroscience major stream. He is the course coordinator for the many 300 and 400 series research project courses offered by Human Biology, supporting students by providing workshops on research, writing, presenting and career development skills. He offers popular service learning opportunities in two courses to help students develop leadership skills in the community. His teaching scholarship initiatives include grant funded projects to develop a neuroscience concept inventory, service learning opportunities, teaching assistant training, and to design online teaching strategies including synchronous online webinar delivery of Introduction to Neurobiology.
